F1: Alonso wins in Bahrain as Vettel falters

Fernando Alonso celebrates his win in Bahrain

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso won the Bahrain Grand Prix in a one-two for the Italian team.

The Spaniard capitalised on mechanical problems for Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, who had started from pole position (below) and looked comfortable for the win in the first race of the new Formula 1 season.

But a spark plug failure slowed the German down, allowing Alonso to catch him on lap 34. His Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa also passed Vettel for second, as did McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton for third.

Vettel finished in fourth place, just ahead of Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg. Michael Schumacher, in his first race for three years, was sixth, just behind his young teammate, having been unable to match Rosberg for pace all weekend. Reigning world champion Jenson Button was seventh, ahead of Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

2010: Bahrain startThere were mixed fortunes for the three brand new teams. The Hispania cars of Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna both failed to finish the race, as did the Virgin machines of Lucas di Grassi and Timo Glock. But both Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli managed to finish in the first race for the new Lotus outfit.

The revised points system for 2010 means that Alonso leads on 25 points, ahead of Massa on 18. Hamilton has 15 points, Vettel 12 and Rosberg 10.

In the constructors’ championship, Ferrari took the maximum 43 points from the weekend and leads McLaren on 21, Mercedes on 18 and Red Bull on 16.

The next race is the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 28.
