Abu Dhabi prepares for 2010 Desert Challenge

Action from the 2009 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

The 2010 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will begin under the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, before heading out into the dunes at the end of this month.

More than 100 competitors, bikes, cars and trucks will leave the city’s landmark building on March 27 before making the journey towards the Al Dhafrah plateau, ready to start the rally through the Liwa desert. They will cover hundreds of kilometres through the dunes of the Empty Quarter, finishing on April 1. The rally will be based at the Moreeb Sand dune near Liwa.

The Desert Challenge represents the season opener for both the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup and the FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the event chairman and president of the Automobile Touring Club of the UAE, said the 2010 route would take in new parts of the UAE, around Abu Dhabi and Al Gharbia in the Western Region.

“The Liwa terrain of Abu Dhabi’s Western Region is both gruelling and addictive,” said Ben Sulayem, who is a 14-time Middle East rally champion. “We have located some new routes this year, and stages 4 and 5 will take the competitors into areas that will make for great driving and are also good for spectator viewing.

“Indeed, I have heard many a competitor comment that the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is something to rise to, and then be hooked.”
