Volkswagen reveals the next generation Touareg

Volkswagen has revealed the second-generation Touareg SUV at in Munich ahead of its official debut at next month’s .

From the images released, the SUV looks more dynamic and sporty white retaining the size of its predecessor . However VW point out that the Touareg has shed about 208kg from its previous generation.

Up front, the new Touareg bears the new family face which is also seen on the latest Polo and Golf hatchbacks. The body panels bear smart crease lines making the SUV look leaner. LED daytime running lamps, LED tail lamps, rear bumper integrated dual exhaust pipes are other modifications.

VW has also introduced its first ever mass production hybrid drivetrain in an SUV in the new Touareg. The hybrid motor combines VW’s supercharged direct injection 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor.

The SUV is also available with a normally aspirated 3.6-litre V6 engine for those not wanting a hybrid.  All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, a first for the segment.

Other new features will include adaptive xenon headlights, active cruise control, button-operated parking brake, engine auto stop-start system and nine airbags.

The new Touareg is expected to launch in the Middle East by August 2010 but details and prices are yet to be announced.
