2008 Toyota Avalon | new car review

Posted on Feb 2, 2010 by

Relaunched in the region towards the end of 2005 in
its new form, the Avalon currently is tagged as the most expensive
and the biggest sedan in the line-up in the Middle East. The
Avalon is unchanged for 2008 as it gamely carries on.

Powered by the V6 found in the Aurion and loaded
with all the expected goodies – electric everywhere – the car is
very definitely geared to the premium car buyer who does not want to
have an ostentatious badge on the car (read that as Lexus),
preferring to stick around with a nameplate that ensures relative
anonymity. While this may be good in some respects, the Avalon gets
lost somewhere between the sporty Aurion and the entry Lexus.

Smart yet anonymous styling marks this car
continuing Toyota’s gamut of playing safe with the design. It is
refined but just lacks the character needed for a car of this
calibre. Inside there is ample room for five, although four would be
basking in absolute comfort.

Avalon dumped the original 3.0-litre V6 plant from
the earlier generation for an all-new 280bhp 3.5-litre V6 which is
mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Two versions of the
Avalon are available in the Middle East: XL and the Limited.

The Avalon is a capable alternative to other more
expensive executive luxury cars – both from the Lexus stable as
well as the other European and American brands – and is absolutely
competent. It has a very high list of standard features but as
mentioned before gets lost in transition as far as its positioning
goes, which is a shame.

Update: In January 2010, Toyota announced that 2005-2010 model year Avalons were being recalled over safety fears.
