2008 Chevrolet Corvette | new car review

Posted on Jan 22, 2010 by

The Chevy Corvette, arguably, is one of America’s greatest sports cars. It’s thrilling to drive, with breathtaking acceleration coupled with high levels of cornering grip. For 2008, the Corvette is available as a or , with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Z06 model is available only as a fixed-roof coupe.

Value isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when talk turns to the Corvette, but the Corvette provides one of the best values for the buck when it comes to high performance cars. In fact, it is the cheapest supercars one can buy with only Nissan’s new, forthcoming GT-R anywhere close to its price.

2008 brings an all-new V8 engine for the Corvette Coupe and Convertible. The new LS3 V8 is larger, at 6.2 litres versus the previous 6.0-litre LS2 engine. Output has been bumped up to 430 hp, an increase of 30 with torque also increasing by 30 Newton metres to 570.

If this is not enough, then one can cast an eye on the Corvette Z06 which employs a 505 hp 7.0-litre V8 motor along with a six-speed manual transmission. The Z06 comes only in hardtop guise. Asymmetric P285/35ZR18 front and P325/30ZR19 rear tyres connect the car to the road, while heads-up display comes as standard fitment. Performance is this car’s forte and is sharp as a knife by American standards, falling a mite short against similar European competition.

Standard features for the Corvette include leather seating surfaces, dual-zone automatic climate control with a pollen filter; power everything (including seats), cruise control, tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry and starting, automatic headlights, alarm, fog lights and xenon headlights.

The Corvette nameplate has always aroused unbridled passion. The 2008 has raw power and is a thrill to drive. If brute power is your forte, then this is the sports car to buy.
