2009 Volvo XC90 | new car review

The XC90 is ’s first attempt at a full-blown SUV and the general consensus of opinion is that they’ve nailed it rather well on this first attempt; so well done .

And it was about time that the famous Swedish brand made a move into this lucrative market, seeing as their reputation for quality and safety would translate so perfectly into this automotive segment.

It is better now, but for some years, in the early days of SUVs many rollover accidents gave the truck-based cars a bad reputation, and rightly so. But, as the years have passed drivers have gotten more used to driving them, and new technology has helped to sense the impending rollover, and new suspension designs has helped to stop it. So, with a brand like Volvo putting their overtly safety-conscious name behind an SUV it certainly could help to get SUV-shy new customers into the XC.

2009 Volvo XC90Built into the XC90 package are the traditional solid and reassuring Volvo looks with strong body lines mixed up with deep and certain angular lines, all coming together to offer a tough yet refined look; the prefect mix for a premium midsize SUV. Thanks to that large external SUV footprint you’ll be finding all the space and comfort you’ll need within this big-style 4×4.

Up to seven passengers can ride with all the space they’ll need and on top of the people, the XC90 can swallow plenty of their luggage, too. Versatile seating options include a third row of seats that can be folded
flat for cavernous luggage space, and a second row of seating that can be moved both forwards and backwards within the cabin to offer many more legroom options to those passengers riding behind the driver.

2009 Volvo XC90Options go all the way up from cloth to leather, as well as options on finishes like real wood veneers – so, if the price is right you can both power-up and luxuriate pretty much everything within the XC’s cabin, turning it into a full-on luxury cruise liner that can also dish out some fun in the desert sun.

And there are all the tough and powerful suspension and four-wheel-drive systems you’ll need to enjoy that rough stuff and decent ground clearence to bash your way through the boulders; just be careful not to scrape those lovely 18-inch wheels. If fun is the way for you, then a sports package will stiffen-up that bouncy SUV suspension and up the bling-rating with bigger 19-inch wheels.

2009 Volvo XC90With a top-of-the-range V8 engine option that offers lots of grunt and a gorgeous noise, the XC90 really is starting to look like a viable option to the plentiful BMW X5s and VW Touaregs that we see all to often on the UAE roads.
