2009 Volvo S80 | new car review

With the S80, things are starting to get a little more serious from ; this is, after all, their top-of-the-range offering that must compete with the best of the best from the finest of the finest in the luxury midsize saloon market.

The most expensive of the S80 range packs a 4.4-litre, V8 petrol engine, that certainly packs the right sort of punch, making 315bhp and 440Nm of torque as it does. All of power and grunt is transferred very competently to the tarmac via an all-wheel-drive system and six-speed automatic gearbox, with those all-important and very fun F1-style paddle-shift levers.

Whilst the figures backing-up the range-topping S80 would be plenty enough for most drivers, Volvo must also be conscious that brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW make some seriously powerful range-topping cars, and in this current automotive engine climate of incredible horsepower, it could well be time soon for Volvo to bolt a turbocharger onto that V8 and fire the horsepower into the 500s.

2009 Volvo S80The styling is distinctly Scandinavian, and again, the flagship S80 sports that gentle arc from its tip to its tail, that is so simple, yet still so stunning to behold.

The face is pure Volvo and the sides exude a high level of strength and safety thanks that depth and sold form. The headlights and taillights too are basic and uncluttered; Volvo having chosen not to follow the rest of the automotive world with all singing, all dancing lighting systems. Again, if you want to be a little different to the rest, then this top-end of the Volvo range could well be a good place to start with your new car search.

2009 Volvo S80Inside the S80 is a world that is clean and serene, both in terms of design and comfort. Everything is there that you will ever need and desire, all represented in a less flashy way than many of the rival cars in this segment. Fit and finish will be top-notch and with all the right, high quality materials in extensive use, the wear and tear aspects of the S80 interior will be of no concern to the general user.

Comprehensive safety features within the S80 include ABS (anti-lock) brakes, electronic stability control, dual front airbags, and side impact airbags for SIPS, inflatable curtain airbags and WHIPS whiplash protection system. All wrapped-up in a trademark ultra-safe Volvo chassis; a combination that will always reassure buyers.
