Grand Vitara

The Grand Vitara is Suzuki’s take on the segment and it does do a reasonable job of mixing on street and off-road performance.

The new 2009 Grand Vitara, which was launched in the Middle East in October 2008, improves the SUV further and makes it better value. The design is clean cut and contemporary with a butch look to it. The flat bonnet, honeycomb black grille with the prominent Suzuki logo and the big rectangular clear lens head lamps give the Vitara a macho frontage.

Flared wheel arches which continue into the front bumper and the tailgate installed spare wheel accentuate the SUV look and the Grand Vitara will appeal to those who prefer the resilient SUV look as against the crossover look of rivals like the Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Outlander. The 2009 model continues with the three-door and five-door variants which widen the Grand Vitara’s appeal.

2009 Suzuki Grand VitaraThe 2009 model does not have many design changes except for a restyled front bumper and grille, new OVRMs with turn indicators and new 17 and 18 inch sporty alloys. The main gripe of the old Grand Vitara were the puny engine choices and Suzuki has rectified that by plonking two bigger engines; 2.4 litre four cylinder (166bhp) and 3.2 litre V6 (233bhp) in the 2009 model.

This increase in power makes the Grand Vitara a competent performer and also improves it off-road capability. The 3.2 litre V6 propels the Vitara from 0-100 km/h in a scant 9.3 seconds with a top whack of 200 km/h. The 2.4 litre engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox while the 3.2 litre V6 only comes with a five-speed automatic transmission.

2009 Suzuki Grand VitaraOff-road credentials have also been improved with the new hill hold and hill descent controls on the five-door 3.2-litre engine model. Suzuki has also improved safety by providing for rear disc brakes which give this compact SUV better stopping power to match the extra power from the bigger engines. Suzuki claims to have improved the new Vitara’s powertrain and sound damping to make it even quieter on the inside.

The old Vitara’s bare bones interiors were too drab for a SUV in this segment with too many bits from the SX4 and even the Swift. Suzuki has realized it’s folly to an extent and given the new Vitara the beige treatment with new beige interiors and leather seats on the higher variants.

2009 Suzuki Grand VitaraMore improvements include a slide-able centre console with armrest, chrome-plated inside door openers and black wood-grain interior garnish and new back-lit steering switches. The multi-information display reveals the outside temperature, icy road warning, fuel consumption, range and average speed data and is a useful tool to have especially for driving excursions.

The Grand Vitara is sold in the JX (three-door), JLX and JLX-EL variants and is priced between UAE Dirhams 77000 to 106000. With the new engines, improved off road ability and refreshed interiors the 2009 Vitara is even better value now and might just get the vote of urban SUV buyers in the Middle East.
