2009 Skoda Superb | new car review

The Superb is ’s flagship model and is a full size executive sedan which offers a lot of luxury and comfort at a bargain basement price.

The Superb is based on parent firm Volkswagen’s Passat platform which is extended by ten centimetres to offer immense interior space. The Superb is so roomy that it beats even the Mercedes E Class in terms of rear legroom and is almost as spacious as the S Class for rear seat occupants. The current Superb on sale in the Middle East was launched internationally in 2001 and is now a generation old with the new model launched in Europe and expected at our shores in .

As a result the current model looks dated with its slab-sided boxy design and vintage interiors which are unlikely to entice buyers to open their purse strings. If you choose to ignore this car’s unappealing looks there is much to appreciate. The car is very well built and offers excellent comfort and lavish equipment for its price.

2008 Skoda SuperbThe door open wide and you can almost walk into this car instead of crouching in. The saloon also cocoons its occupants in a way that only cars twice its price can manage and there is very little noise that penetrates its rigid shell. The leather seats are very supportive and will seat three abreast at the rear. Quality of plastics, fabrics and leather are all top notch and match high standards set by group companies Volkswagen and Audi.

There are thoughtful conveniences too like the built-in umbrella holder in the left rear door, the cool box integrated into the arm rest and the illuminated inside door handles. Equipment is also quite lavish and includes climate control, power seat with memory, bi-xenon headlamps with washers, power sunroof, rain sensing wipers, heater power mirrors with memory and cruise control.

2008 Skoda SuperbThe Superb is propelled by a 2.8-litre V6, 30 valve motor which is mounted longitudinally and belts out 193 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a Tiptronic five-speed gearbox, which transmits power to the front wheels. The Superb is a very safe car and employs a host of safety tech to keep occupants safe. Anti lock brakes (ABS) with electric brake distribution (EBD), electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control are standard fitment along with front and side airbags.

The is priced from UAE Dirhams 87,000 to 118,000 (ex-showroom Dubai) and at that price competes with the Volkswagen Passat, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Mondeo and Peugeot 407.

2008 Skoda SuperbSpacious and well equipped, the Superb has a lot going for it but it suffers from Skoda brand’s lack of image in the Middle East market and that is why buyers don’t value this car even at the tempting price it’s pegged at. However, with the new Superb expected by early 2009 it is a good idea to wait and see how much Skoda has improved on the current model.
