2009 Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe | new car review

As if the incredible Phantom is not enough, upped the luxury stakes in 2008 with the Drophead – what may well be the highest echelon of full-size, luxury motoring.

A distinctly nautical theme runs throughout the car; this Rolls-Royce looks like its styling was based on a top-notch 1930s speedboat. Climbing through the one of the only two, still suicide-opening, front doors and there is a perfectly presented cabin that is awash with wood, metal and leather.

But, make no mistake, this is the real deal and these materials are incredible – the highest class hotels could only struggle to keep up with this level of opulence.

Everything electronically adjusts to fit your driving position at the touch of a memory button, as you watch in amazement as the steering wheel reaches-out to meet your touch and the seat scrolls towards the pedals, maintaining your perfect position.

All of the numbers associated with the Drophead Coupe are as other-worldly as the car itself. For example; there are fifteen cow hides making up the leather trim, and another fifteen speakers reproducing your favourite music with incredible clarity, and then there are the massive 21-inch, light-alloy wheels that this whole automotive masterpiece rolls along so smoothly on.

And the cherry on this incredible cake is the 719Nm or torque that hauls this beautiful beast along, and thanks to the deep-welled grunt churning up from the enormous V12 engine, 75% of that torque is yours and on tap at just 1000rpm on the tacho. This is almost unheard of and enables the Drophead to waft along the highway with just the slightest and sweetest of hums from the engine. This is what it feels like to ride on a magic carpet.

With probably the most provoking mixture of classic and modern looks of any car on the market, the Rolls-Royce Coupe absolutely cannot be ignored. The wide, chrome traditional front grille, sweeping Art Deco-inspired body lines and as much chrome detailing as can be seen on any car; the Drophead will attract all the attention you could ever handle.

And for the UAE, with that massive appetite for the purest of opulence, it is no wonder at all that the waiting list for one of these wonders is just about nearly as long as that never-ending bonnet.
