2009 Dodge Durango | new car review

The 2009 is the only vehicle in the current line-up that still sports the more traditional look of rounded and rugged styling; a look that might be starting to get a little out-dated.

The name Durango is taken from a town in Colorado, USA that is surrounded by a rugged and rocky landscape and is very outdoor-life-focused. And this is the feeling that Dodge want you to get from their Durango SUV. In the middle east though, its the sand dunes that dominate the scene. Will the mighty Durango deliver the same performance?

Full of curves and rounded edges, there is not one edge on the 2009 Dodge Durango that could even vaguely threaten to cut a careless finger! The front end could be said to be rather ‘bull-nosed’; a look that’s more in common with the big Dodge trucks, like the Ram.

The styling exudes a look of hard aggression; perfect for bad-boys, and also kind of cool.

The Durango has the beef and power to back up those bad-boy looks, with a splendid 5.7-litre, V8, petrol engine wedged-in under that wide hood. The ‘Hemi’ nameplate is one of American legend. There isn’t a huge amount of difference between this and other American manufacturer V8 engines, apart from the Hemi name which comes from the shape of its combustion chambers, which are hemispherical; a shape which Dodge says gives better combustion efficiency.

However its designed, this motor is still nicely powerful and torquey with 376bhp and 520Nm – some large numbers to get this large SUV moving with some good pace.

There is a fuel efficiency system that shuts down four of the eight cylinders during lighter driving, saving you a few sips of fuel here and there, but if you do drive the Durango with any sort of gusto, you will be well known at the petrol station.

The 2009 Dodge Durango is, of course, four-wheel drive, which gives it good grip on uneven, muddy or wet road surfaces. Thanks to its weight and tall suspension you cannot expect completely car-like handling from the Durango.
