2009 Peugeot 407 | new car review

Comfort and space are the key design aims of the 407, which is ’s large family car, available in four-door saloon and two-door versions.

The looks are quite aggressive, with long, narrow headlights and a gaping front grille at the front of a sizable bonnet, leaving a large overhang forward of the front wheels.

Inside however, the focus is on creating a luxurious and spacious feel, with plenty of soft touch materials and a dashboard that stretches out towards the windscreen.

The entry-level model is the Confort Pack, powered by a 2.0-litre engine with 134bhp, attached to a four-speed automatic gearbox. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers and cruise control, as well as full electrics, a cooled glove box for chilling drinks and a sunblind for the rear windscreen. Automatic air conditioning will keep the car at constant temperature (all models also have a vent in the rear of the car) and there’s a net in the boot to keep luggage secure.

The Premium trim level is available with the 2.0-litre engine, a 2.2-litre unit with 160bhp or the top-of-the-line 3.0-litre V6, pushing out 211bhp.

The 2.0-litre version features dual zone air conditioning and 16-inch alloys, while the 2.2-version adds 17-inch alloys and an electric sliding sunroof. A Bluetooth hands-free phone connection is also included, along with front and rear parking sensors.

A Premium GPS version adds satellite navigation as well as USB and auxiliary sockets for music players to be plugged into the car’s stereo. This version is powered by the 2.2-litre engine.

The 3.0-litre unit uses an advanced six-speed automatic gearbox and comes with 16-inch alloys and dual zone air conditioning.

Just one trim level is available for the 407 Coupe, although individual requests for customisation will be entertained where possible.

The coupe ditches two doors and styles up the exterior design a notch. It’s powered by the 3.0-litre V6 engine and features electronically controlled suspension that changes the firmness to either comfort or sporty settings at the push of a button.

It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels (with tyre pressure monitors) as well as xenon headlights that swivel with the steering input to improve visibility when going around corners.

Full leather seats are included, along with dual-zone air conditioning, auto headlights and wipers and front and rear parking sensors that link to a visual display on the cabin screen. It also includes a JBL sound system with a six CD changer and electric, heated front seats. The rear seats have an armrest with a storage space inside and the rear sunblind is electrically powered.

A sliding electric sun roof is included as are – ABS, electronic brake distribution with brake assist and electronic stability control.

Smooth and Gallicly stylish, the 407 is not exactly a common sight on UAE roads, but that makes it that little bit more exclusive.
