First seen at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show as a concept car, the has finally come to production stage.

The Frankfurt Motor Show saw the first official unveiling of the new four-door sports car which will help Aston Martin expand its clientele and compete with other sporting sedans such as the Porsche Panamera, Maserati Quattroporte and Jaguar XFR.

Speaking at the Rapide’s debut, Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin said: “With Rapide, the entire family can enjoy their Aston Martin together in unison, in an invigorating yet comfortable environment, sitting low, with plenty of visibility from every seat and with new levels of comfort, refinement and entertainment.”

Powered by reworked DB9 6.0 litre V12 engine the Rapide gets 470bhp. Performance is brisk for a four-seater sedan and 0-100 kph is dispatched in 5.3 seconds despite its almost two-tonne bulk.

The production version of the Rapide is almost the same as the concept car, except for some minor toned down features. The tradional Aston Martin styling, low stance and sporting character is maintained despite the additional length and two extra doors.

‘Swan wing’ front and rear doors, which rise upwards as they open outwards, give a nice visual effect. LED tail lights, a long bootlid accentuated by a decklid spoiler and dual exhausts give the rear a look which is deserving of an Aston Martin.

The interior is very well appointed but the Rapide seats only four as there is a high central tunnel running throughout the length of the cabin.
