Hyundai ix-35 (and friend) at the Frankfurt Motor Show

’s new Tucson for the 2010 year, the ix-35, made its official debut at the .

The compact SUV is based on the ix-onic concept which we saw at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and looks quite similar to the latter despite being toned down for production.

Hyundai will launch the compact SUV with a 2.0-litre 164bhp petrol engine and will introduce an entry-level 138bhp, 1.6-litre unit by the end of 2010.  The engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Considering the vehicle’s weight, the engine choices seem to be on the underpowered side, but we will only be able to judge exactly how the ix-35 performs when we are able to get our hands on the wheel and take it for a spin.

The soft roader is equipped with four-wheel drive, hill assist control and downhill brake control giving it some off-road credibility – on paper, at least. 16-inch alloy wheels are standard while 18-inch rims with lower profile tyres are optional. The interiors seem to be well appointed in-line with most Hyundai’s of today.

Hyundai will begin manufacturing the ix-35 by the end of 2009 with deliveries beginning in 2010.
