’s ‘small bundle of joy’, the Yaris, began life as a which later spawned a sedan body-style. In the Middle East both the and sedan are quite popular with individual and fleet buyers.

Toyota’s reputation for being a quality manufacturer of reliable cars which are fun too, is held up by the Yaris. It offers the budget car buyer good value for money and is a fresh looking and stylish car which is cheap to buy and run.

For the urban jungle where parking slots are always a rare find, the Yaris hatch makes life easier with its compact dimensions, light steering and nimble handling. The sedan offers more luggage space and better rear seat comfort. The Yaris hatch comes only with one engine a 1.3-litre 84bhp motor while the sedan has the choice of a bigger 1.5-litre 107bhp engine which is makes up for the car’s increased weight due to the boot.

2009 Toyota YarisThe Yaris is not a hot hatch or a performance sedan by both engines are peppy units which deliver very good fuel efficiency and will lat for years without as much as a hiccup. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed autobox.

Three trim levels are available; Basic, Mid-Range and Top-Range with generous equipment on the fully loaded model which features 15-inch alloy wheels, power windows and locks, audio system with iPod connectivity, parking sensors and fog lamps. The Yaris features the cab-forward design which has helped create a roomy interior which is cheerful and airy. The Yaris has a distinct identity with its stout nose made up of the large bumper which integrates the grille and meets the short bonnet much above the large Toyota Logo.

2009 Toyota YarisToyota has improved the Yaris and the current model looks much more proportionate and well endowed than the previous model. The car looks very contemporary thanks to its seamless flowing design. The high shoulder line runs at the door handle level and continues till the tail lamps.

In the sedan the boot is nicely integrated into the rest of the car without making it look like an afterthought. On the inside the Yaris has a few surprises like the central instrument panel which some like while some loathe and think of it to be inconvenient as it takes longer for the driver to see the display. The spartan looking dashboard is made of quality two-tone plastic which is soft to touch.

2009 Toyota YarisSafety kit includes dual front airbags, ABS and Brake Assist. The Yaris has achieved a four-star NCAP crash rating which is respectable for a car in this price segment and will instil confidence in those who doubt hatchbacks’ safety quotient.
