2009 Chevrolet Corvette | new car review

The Corvette is the original bad-boy of American automotive history, and if your own character is fast, loud and proud, then this could well be the ultimate sports car for you. In either or , that Corvette shape and aggression is instantly recognizable and also represents some seriously big bangs for your car-buying bucks. Low and sleek, with a wide-open ‘mouth’ and piercing, sharp headlight ‘eyes’, the Corvette has a hungry shark on the prowl look about it, and with this kind of power and performance on tap, you too can go on the hunt for scalps on the racetrack or away from the stop signal. Even after as many years of evolution as the ‘Vette has been through, you can still spot the original design DNA. Long and low bonnet, steeply raked-back windscreen, that fat and chunky rear end with two pairs of circular rear lights all come together to complete this wonderfully historic shape. Pure power and pure performance is the Corvette’s only statement. And even more so for the current model.

There always has been and always will be a large-capacity V8 out in front of the ‘Vette, and in 2009 nothing has changed. As a convertible or coupe your 2009 Corvette will be pulled along, rather quickly, by the 6.2-litre, LS2 petrol engine. It’s design dates back many decades; materials and power have been evolved and updated, but this big block is intrinsically the same as it was many, many years ago. OK, so at 6.2-litres, you’ll never see super fuel economy, but you will see some serious performance thanks to all that petrol being usefully burnt to produce a whopping 430bhp and 570Nm of torque. In recent years the Corvette has even slimmed-down a little, so even more of that power gets thrown down onto the road in acceleration, rather than going to waste hauling excess body weight. 100kph comes in the mid four-seconds, and a top speed of just over 300kph is quickly reached. But, if this blast-off factor is still not enough for you, you can have more.

The Z06 is most definitely the king of the open road, thanks to its heart-stopping, wait for it, 7-litre V8 engine. 0-100kph now comes in less than 4/seconds; 3.9 to be precise, and the top speed builds to a very prison-friendly 317kph. You can only buy the Z06 as a coupe, the car needing all the possible torsional strength it can muster to keep that tarmac-curling 637Nm of torque from virtually snapping the chassis in two. The soundtrack matches the incredible performance, with both the 6.2-litre and 7-litre engines pumping-out the sort of apocalyptic rumble that will most certainly annoy the neighbours. The interior isn’t wonderful when compared to the European supercars, but there will be leather, electric everything and a fair amount of space for just two people. However, it is quite unlikely that you’ll even notice the interior specification, once your foot is floored and the world if warping past. 2009 Chevrolet Corvette
