2009 Aston Martin V8 Vantage | new car review

If the DB9 is an effortlessly powerful and gentlemanly GT from England then its smaller sibling, the Vantage, is the stocky, snarling street-brawler from the same hometown.

Whilst the Vantage unmistakably exudes that same slickly stunning class of the DB, there’s something a little more menacing and brutish about this car. And that is no bad thing.

For now, the Vantage is V8 powered although a V12-engined version is on the way soon. The V8’s proportions are that little bit more, well ‘tubby’, really and it’s this puppy-fat around its bodywork that makes the ‘baby’ Aston just look so tough. Looking, as it does, a lot like the DB9, the V8 Vantage looses some of the DB9’s length, thanks to a shorter bonnet, thanks in turn to the shorter proportions of the V8 engine under it, as opposed to the lengthy V12 within the DB9. And it’s at this shorter bonnet where the true gorgeous, stocky styling of the V8 begins.

Everything just looks that bit wider than on the Aston DB9, with huge wheel arches curving over huge wheels and plumply-rounded front and rear ends that make most hearts skip a beat every time they can be seen. All of Aston Martin’s usual aluminium master-work can also be seen in the V8 Vantage, from the ground up, the lithe little Aston gets all of the chassis and body treatments in the aerospace material that its big brothers enjoy. Make no mistake; cheaper it may be, but there is not much to separate the V8 from the very fastest cars in the world, the more expensive Astons included.

The V8 Vantage is powered by a 4.3-litre, quad-cam, 32-valve, V8 petrol engine that makes a very useful 420bhp and 470Nm or torque; more that enough grunt to keep the Vantage on the wrong side of motorway speed limits and some racetrack speed limits for that matter.

The latest engine, chassis and suspension technology can all be found under the beautiful skin of the V8 Aston; all of it lightweight and as high performance as possible, coming together with an extremely stylish execution that also ensures a scintillating drive.

Interiors are again a wonder-world of leather, wood and aluminium, with many new Astons specified with hand-picked interior designs, by their intended new owners. Aston Martin has long enjoyed a reputation for some of the very finest materials and highest build qualities of any car manufacturer and now they’ve added the stunning space-age performance of their current line-up into the mix making for one of the most intoxicating automotive experiences that money can buy.

The V8 Vantage is available both and Roadster forms.

Earlier in 2009, Aston confirmed that they will be building a more powerful version of the Vantage for the real hardcore fanatics. The V12 Vantage RS will pack a 6.0-litre, 510bhp V12 engine and will be available from September 2009. Be quick though, only around 300 will be made each year.
