2009 Maserati GranTurismo | new car review

had been a little quiet of recent years, with little of much note coming from the famous Italian manufacturer from some time; until a fairly recent spate of truly fabulous sporting cars that have once again pushed the legendary brand right back into the public eye, where it belongs. And the Granturismo is one of those very cars to grab the attention and keep it, delivering the sort of style that only the Italians can really pull-off with such perfect precision.

This is one perfectly proportioned GT, or grand touring car; a car that must be fast yet comfortable, lithe yet roomy and attractive and exclusive. And all of these most critical boxes are very much ticked indeed by the .

For a beginning, what a body! That Maserati front grille is wide and low to the road; the rushing air forcing its way passed the famous trident badge, on its way to the engine bay where it will be no doubt sucked into the hungry engine and swiftly burnt along with the fuel. Ultra-modern headlights begin a whole host of gorgeous curves that start at the sumptuous front wheels arches and simply do not stop throughout the rest of the car – you can tell that the Granturismo was penned by the world-class stylists at Italy’s Pininfarina automotive design house.

2009 Maserati GranTurismoThe overhangs are short, almost stubby, and the large and lightweight, multi-spoke alloy wheels at each near corner of this GT car further accentuate the Granturismo’s light-on-it’s-feet looks that most certainly match its on-road performance. The roofline starts to drop very dramatically the moment it passes the front seat headrests and plummets towards the rear of the car, finishing with a very short trunk area and deliciously curvaceous rear end – all in all the near-perfect GT shape.

The interior features all of that Italian magic that we all just love to love, with four passengers enjoying the wild ride if needs be. There aren’t exactly acres and acres of space in the rear seating area of this 2+2, 2-door , but who cares when you’re riding in this wonderfully rare and beautiful beast. The choice is yours when it comes to the colour of the leather or the finish of the hard surfaces like wood or metal, but such is the bespoke level of these hyper-exclusive cars, that the discerning customer has almost endless choices to express their own personal style, through their Maserati.

2009 Maserati GranTurismoThe body is all Maserati, but the engine, drivetrain and mechanicals etc are from the Ferrari factory – but that’s not a bad thing, right? You can pick and choose over two V8 engines; one a 4.2-litre unit making 405bhp, or the even faster 4.7-litre engined S version making a very enjoyable 440bhp. Both cars are very fast and both cars just sound incredible; the ultimate in GT motoring?
