Papantonis & Al Azhari Clinch Podium Positions

Dubai – The opening round of the 2006/2007 DAMC National Racedays took place over the weekend at the Dubai Autodrome with Costas Papantonis recording the fastest lap of 2:06.594 in the GTi Cup, while Karim Al Azhari topped the timing of the Bartercard Gulf Radical Cup setting a time of 1:43.155.

The raceday started in the morning with practice followed by qualifying sessions to determine the grid positions for the races in the afternoon. In the GTi Cup, Papantonis won the first race but it was last season’s champion who made a storming start moving from fifth on the grid to second and maintaining this position till the end of the race. The second race was closely fought between Papantonis who again managed to finish first and Trutch who finished second. The margin was a mere of 0.275 seconds.

During Race 1 of the Bartercard Gulf Radical Cup, Karim Al Azhari managed to finish first in front of Jean Yves Mallat while Bassam Kronfli rounded the podium. The second race witnessed a fierce battle between Jean Yves Mallat who managed to overtake Al Azhari in the first lap. Mallat fought with Al Azhari for 10 laps but in the penultimate lap Al Azhari spun and could not start his car and therefore was forced to retire. 2nd place went to Omran Al Owais.

In addition to the National Racedays, the weekend also witnessed Round 7 of the National Karting Championship at the Kartdrome while the Race & Driving School offered driving experiences for customers at the oval track of the Autodrome.
