2009 Opel Astra | new car review

A bit player in the
Middle East, the Astra seems to chug along well behind the rest
of the small German hatchbacks/compacts. The Astra is available as a
five-door model with a choice of two four-cylinder
powerplants – a 1.6-litre making 115 horsepower and a 1.8-litre
with 140hp and 175Nm of torque. The 1.6-litre is available with only
a manual gearbox while the latter and more powerful 1.8 is available
with only an automatic transmission.

Quite a crisp looker, the
Astra looks purposeful with the right execution of concave and convex
surfaces. It is so far available only as a five-door hatchback here
in the UAE, this hatch has generous dimensions, resulting in comfort
and ample space.

Just as the exterior
shines, the interior also exudes with German finesse and world class
quality. This is evident not only in its look, but also in the high
level of textural quality of all surfaces. The bold design elements
in the Astra’s cockpit include the striking centre console with its
large knobs and three-dimensional instruments. Opel has made use of
chrome inserts in the cabin to give an overall sporty attitude to the
interior too.

Despite of being quite a
capable small car; it has quite a following in Europe, the Astra has
sadly been denied the right to compete favourably with its rivals in
the region due to a distinct lack of highlighting its virtues. In
many ways, Opel is like the proverbial step son of GM who has been
cast away as the American automotive giant concentrates on its other
