GM Wooing Tata & Mahindra To Hummer!

Posted on Jul 14, 2009 by

India’s
Tata Motors may just have pocketed Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford,
but its seems as though the buying-spree of Indian car moguls is just
not over yet. The next in line is none other than the iconic Hummer
brand that (GM) is all set to wash its hands off!

According
to reports on Indian-business newspaper ‘Economic Times’, it seems
that the GM has approached both Tata Motors and its rival Mahindra &
Mahindra about a possible acquisition of its Hummer brand.

GM
recently announced soon after its annual meeting that it was
considering the sale of its off-road brand brand mainly owing to
increased fuel prices and steep decline in sales in the US market. With
the current ‘go-green’ trend, it’s common understanding that no US or
Japanese car-maker would want to add the image of a gas-guzzling SUV
into their existing line-up.

With Indian majors, Tata Motors and
Mahindra & Mahindra still heavily dependent on sales of trucks
and SUV’s its no big thing for them to bring in Hummer into their
manifold. Considering Tata is the new proud owner of Land Rover and
Mahindra is eyeing to bite a piece of the US compact pick-up market,
the Hummer seems to suit their current portfolios and aspirations
quite well.
