2008 Volvo XC70 | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

Described elsewhere as a
station wagon on stilts, ’s XC70 picks up where the last
generation left off. The XC70 is the latest generation in capable
on/off road vehicles from this Swedish automobile manufacturer. For
those of you shopping for a car with all the attributes and
versatility of an SUV minus the high ride and the imposing look, then
look no further, the XC70 makes a good case for itself!

Scandinavian
sensibilities have always been about form following function. The
XC70 continues in a rather buttoned-down, conservative fashion, due
in part to its Sweden pedigree. But that won’t stop Volvo from
laying claim to a slot in the ever-so-hot crossover segment. At the
same time, Volvo is claiming “added luxury as well as even greater
capabilities for adventure.”

The XC clearly stands for
‘Cross Country’ but the XC70 is a very different vehicle from the
bigger XC90. It has much in common with the Volvo V70, except for its
more macho off-road aesthetic. However, the higher ground clearance,
larger tyres and specially designed panels and protective shields
give the XC70 model a tough profile all its own. The interior, with a
Scandinavian touch, is a combination of design and function. With all
the earth tones inside, the interior could be described best as
organic in nature.

The XC70 model in the
Middle East is offered with a normally aspirated 3.2-litre
six-cylinder engine making 238bhp and 320Nm of torque mated to a
6-speed automatic with Geartronic technology. As in all modern Volvo
cars, the compact in-line six-cylinder engine is mounted transversely
into the front structure. Safety wise, the XC70 comes equipped with
the safety features all Volvos are famous for.
