2008 Volvo V70 | new car review

The estate range is the
quintessence of this sober identity. Sporty to look at,
spacious for the family – that’s the essence of Volvo’s V70.
Currently in its third generation, the new V70 was unveiled by Volvo
last year. Though it looks similar to last year’s model, the
five-door station wagon has been actually redesigned and rides on the
same architecture as the S80 sedan.

The V70 was developed to
be a slightly more up-market car than the model it replaces, but
remains the same size overall. It has a gently rounded nose section,
a roof line that extends straight all the way to the rear of the car
and an abrupt tail section. The tail lamps follow Volvo’s modern
form and sweep up towards the roof panel. The tailgate now has
motorized lift and closing action.

The interior is as usual
the Swedish luxury way with decor wood inlays, leather upholstery and
ventilated leather seats. Thanks to Volvo’s powertrain concept
based on a transversely installed in-line engine, the driver’s
compartment is located far forward, so the passenger compartment
benefits from generous length, offering plenty of space for five
occupants and bulky luggage. Two specifications are available – the
Comfort package and the more expensive Premium package.

A 3.2-litre inline six
coupled to a six-speed automatic is the powerplant doing duty on the
V70. This transversely installed unit makes 238bhp and 320Nm of
torque, which is ample for most daily uses.

The V70 is a good
alternative for those wanting the space of a SUV along with the
driving characteristics of a car. And with safety being Volvo’s
middle name, it is a good bet with most expatriates who value style
with function.
