2008 Volvo S80 | new car review

Easily the best-looking
in more than a generation, ’s flagship S80 is luxurious,
roomy and safe. Volvo designed the S80 to compete against the best on
offer from the competition from all corners of the globe, which
includes BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar, Infiniti, and Lexus, to
name but a few. That’s tough opposition, and Volvo knows it, that’s
why the S80 gets nothing less than three engines – a turbocharged
T5, a V6 and a V8 along with four specific trim levels – Classic,
Comfort, Premium and Prestige, to enable it to compete on a surer
footing with the competition.

Aesthetically, the S80 is
typically Scandinavian. Volvo’s executive class sedan is a worthy
rival to the German class leaders. With excellent equipment and a
beautifully designed cabin, the S80 is incredibly sophisticated,
safe, subtle and sleek. To emphasise its market position, there’s
not even an estate version. Volvo has maintained its individuality
and solid Swedish sensibilities, but not at the expense of style.

All engines are mated to
a standard 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with drive sent
to the front wheels except for the V8 unit which distributes power to
all four wheels.

A new generation of
driving and support systems together with a further-enhanced body
structure and advanced interior safety systems all interact to
contribute to the high level of safety, both preventive and

The S80 needs to get a
fresh outlook as its looks are starting to dull, with the competition
all sprouting new clothes. It also needs some work on the ride and
handling department as it cannot figure out whether it wants to be
sporty or luxurious. On the other hand the V8 is powerful and sounds
the part.
