2008 Volvo S40 | new car review

Still only in its second
generation, the S40 has already won many accolades around the
globe. While all this is fine for world markets, in the Middle East
it comes up against the 3 Series, C-Class and A4, making life that
much tougher as brand perceptions and loyalty rank strongly for its
German competition.

Volvo launched the S40 in
the aim of giving customers large-car properties in a compact format
and with clearly sporty overtones. As such the design language and
the specification level of the S40 harmonized more closely with the
larger Volvo S60 sedan. Volvo has refreshed the S40 for . The car
is now sportier and feels premium.

Despite its compact
exterior dimensions, the offers a spacious and flexible
interior. Its interior is inspired by Scandinavian product design
with the emphasis on uncluttered surfaces, honest materials with good
functionality and, it works – the inside being very much a study in
free-form architecture.

Engines in the Volvo S40
are transversely installed in-line units. The 230bhp 2.5-litre T5 is
the top model, featuring a turbocharger and five-speed automatic
transmission. The other two are both 5-cylinder in-line units in
2.4-litre capacities. The fuel-injected version makes 170bhp as
against the 140bhp of the 2.4-litre in-line five. Power is sent to
the front wheels using a standard 5-speed automatic transmission.

Volvo is legendary in the
field of car safety. Protective safety comes from building the car in
the form of a metal cage from different grades of steel, where all
the components interact with one another to ensure controlled
deformation. Interior safety is ensured by Volvo’s famed systems,
such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact
Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain).
