2008 Volvo C70 | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

The C70 is two cars in
one – a and a – with room to seat four adults
in comfort. This smart looker features a three-piece retractable
steel hardtop which at the press of a button, can raise or lower in
less than 30 seconds.

The C70 follows ’s
latest modern design trends of being rounded with well defined forms
and is just as attractive and desirable whether the roof is up or
down. The boot lid of the C70 is cleverly designed to open in two
opposite directions – either backwards while the roof folding
mechanism is operating or forwards as normal to load luggage.

As a consequence of it
competing in the premium car class, the C70 comes equipped with
almost all that one would ask for in that class. Dual zone automatic
climate control, heated power seats, wood-trim, trip computer, an
automatic day/night rear view mirror and an exceptional hi-fi audio
system are standard.

The C70 can be specified
with either a 2.5-litre high pressure turbocharged in-line 5-cylinder
unit producing 230bhp and 320Nm of torque or a fuel-injected
2.4-litre in-line five that makes 170bhp and 230Nm of peak torque.
Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed automatic
transmission.

Safety and Volvo being
synonymous, the C70 has emergency pop-up roll bars that activate in
case of a rollover. Other safety features include 4-wheel vented disc
brakes, Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS), Anti Whiplash
Protection System (WHIPS), Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and
Dynamic Stability & Traction Control (DSTC).

The C70 is yet another
effort from Volvo as it looks to woo the younger buyer with a more
fluid style statement. It may be a competent car but a comparatively
high list price and the craze for a badge with rings or stars in it
seems to confine this fine car to the role of the bridesmaid rather
than the bride.
