2008 Volvo S60 | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

Last year gave the
S60 a minor face-lift giving a sharper look to its already sporty
profile, and the same has been taken into as well. The S60 was
the very first Volvo to feature a more fluid look as against the
stereotyped boxy Volvo’s and this trend has filtered throughout the
range.

From the outside, the S60
is unmistakably a Volvo. It comes with the standard Volvo-esque
design cues and the changes made last year give it a leaner, more
integrated appearance. A sporty spoiler on the boot lid gives it a
swoopy and sporty persona. The front grille is larger and displays a
more pronounced Volvo emblem in the form of the classic but
rejuvenated iron symbol.

Inside, the S60 features
optional aluminium metal decor panels that have been designed to
create a three-dimensional impression along with a tactile feel. To
further enhance the sporty tone, the instrument panel can be
optionally specified with the same type of watch-like instruments as
in the S80. The range of upholstery has been renewed with a sporty
leather upholstery option in two contrasting shades and textures
topped with contrasting stitching.

Two turbocharged engines
are available. The base engine is the 2.5-litre light pressure
turbocharged in-line five that makes 210bhp and 320Nm of peak torque.
Buyers looking for more power in their S60 can opt for the 2.4-litre
high pressure turbocharged in-line five that makes 260bhp and 350Nm
of torque. Both the turbocharged units are mated to a 5-speed
Geartronic automatic transmission with the power being sent to the
front wheels.

Volvo is synonymous with
safety and the S60’s technologically advanced safety features rule
the roost. Unfortunately, those same features push its weight up. A
few hundred pounds less in steel and safety features might just make
this Volvo into an entertaining vehicle, but something has to set
Volvo apart.
