2008 Volvo C30 | new car review

The smallest and the
newest addition to the line-up in the region, the C30 is
definitely big on guts. Be it in the styling front or the way the
is packaged, it is the kind of a car that will feel at home
in the hands of a boy racer and equally well as a fashionable
statement among the well-heeled. Volvo reckons the C30 will appeal to
an audience in the 25-35 year bracket mainly due to its youthful
outlook.

Despite its compact
format, the C30 offers a generous and flexible interior space and
offers ample place for four adults. The front seats are ergonomically
designed and offer a correct and relaxing seating position. Being a
two-door car, access to the rear seats is achieved by sliding and
tipping the front seats forward with the tapered design of the
B-pillar contributing to ease of getting in & out. The seats are
positioned somewhat towards the centre of the car to provide space
and a good forward view. The rear seat backrests are individually
foldable to create more space in the cargo area.

The C30 is available in
the Middle East with two engine options. The base unit is a 2.4-litre
making 170bhp and 230Nm of peak torque while the more powerful
turbocharged 2.5-litre T5 unit makes 230bhp and 320Nm of torque.
Power is sent to the front wheels using a 5-speed automatic
transmission.

Safety wise, the C30
incorporates the latest safety features such as the BLIS (Blind Spot
Information System), which uses cameras mounted in the side door
mirror to register if another vehicle is in the blind spot.

A welcome addition to the
hordes of hot hatches seeping into the Middle East market, the C30
makes for a good fashion statement whilst imbibing traditional Volvo
traits of safety.
