2008 Volkswagen Touareg | new car review

Starring together with the Phaeton in ’s bid for stardom in the luxury car arena, the Touareg 4×4 first burst into the limelight at the Paris Motor Show in 2002 where it was an instant sensation. A luxury sports utility vehicle, it performs both on and off the road in a manner befitting its class.

Updates for the model year include a completely re-designed front end with distinctive headlamps, new wheels and the insignia radiator grille in chrome that has become an unmistakable stylistic feature of the Volkswagen brand in whole.

Step inside and luxury SUV customers will not be disappointed by the Touareg’s generous list of standard equipment – ‘2-Zone’ electronic climate control (optional  4-Zone); multifunction computer with steering wheel controls; CD system; cruise control; power options; and walnut interior wood trim.

Competing in the luxury SUV vehicle segment, the Touareg has been designed to deliver class-leading performance both on and off the road. It has all the stuff needed to  impress when venturing off the beaten track as well as on tarmac.

Starting from 3.6-litre 280bhp V6 petrol engine the range roars through a 4.2-litre 350bhp V8 to a range-topping 6.0-litre V12 making a monstrous 450bhp and 600Nm of torque. All models have as standard a six-speed Tiptronic auto transmission with power sent to the all-wheel drive via a transfer case with switched extra low gearing.

Definitely one of VW’s success stories in the Middle East, the Touareg SUV seems to go on from strength to strength in the quest to engulf more customers in its fold.
