2008 Volkswagen Polo | new car review

A smart, taut and fit car, the Polo is ’s offering in the small hatchback segment.

It’s been just two years since Volkswagen introduced the current generation Polo into the market with a revitalized fresh design and improved specification. For model year, this humble little hatchback carries on. A smart, taut and fit looking car, the Polo is Volkswagen’s offering in the supermini class here and is quite a handsome  vehicle.

Externally, the most striking feature of the Polo is its new frontal styling, with a bold ‘V’ crease that extends into the bonnet from the shaped grille and extends up to the base of the A-pillars. The grille lends the Polo a more up-market, mature character and also brings it in-line with the rest of the offerings from Volkswagen. New headlights with shape similar to the ones on the new Passat are also featured on the Polo. The side mirror housings now come with side indicators for improved visibility and safety.  The rear taillights are also new with a mix of clear-lens and red indicators, again following the recent trends the company is adopting.

High quality interiors have for some time been synonymous with the Volkswagen name, and the 2008 Polo’s interior- continues in that tradition. High quality fabrics,  simple but clear instrument panel design and graphics and a chunky steering wheel are some of the new features in the car. A clever addition is a handy compartment on top of the dashboard designed to hold items, which are typically easy to lose, such as parking tickets or toll cards.

Volkswagen offers a choice of two powerplants for the Polo, both 1.4-litre petrol units making 75bhp on the base variant and 100bhp on the higher spec model. Both units are shifted using either a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic gearbox. In the safety department, the Polo scores pretty well. It is one of the  safest superminis available here with standard ABS, HBA plus driver and front passenger airbags standard on every model. For a small car, the Polo sure packs in a big  punch. A big deterrent is the high list price, though.
