2008 Volkswagen Passat | new car review

Euro-bland styling conceals a very impressive mechanical package in this model. Not changed from last year, the Passat is ’s answer to the  Japanese, Korean and American mid-size cars not forgetting its home competition.

The Passat has grown in stature and size through its 34 year old career and now is much more than just a middle-class sedan. It has matured a lot and now exhibits  character in dollops. It is a very important model for VW and the thrust put on it can be seen and felt in the high levels of fit and finish along with the levels of equipment  found inside. Exterior appearance is typical Volkswagen with the instantly recognizable large chrome grille – in line with Volkswagen’s current design direction. Elements of the VW’s flagship Phaeton have been incorporated into the car – such as distinctive circular LED taillights, bolder grille and more coupe-like profile.

Inside too, the Passat has a fresher, more dynamic style, with curves and contrasts that combine to form an exclusive ambience. Along with the increase in dimensions of  the car, Volkswagen increased the car’s wheelbase too, resulting in greater interior space. Luggage space has not been forgotten either, with maximum boot capacity  growing by 90 litres to 565 litres.

For the Middle East, Volkswagen offers three powerplants – two 2.0-litre four-pot boilers making 150 and 200 bhp respectively. For buyers looking for power and performance, there is the 3.2-litre V6 with 250bhp and 320Nm of torque. There is a choice of manual and automatic transmissions for the 2.0-litre units, but the V6 can be had only with an autobox.

With excellent perceived quality, the Passat takes the fight to the opposition. Indeed, the Passat makes VW a lot money in almost every market it’s sold in and VW must be  hoping to translate some of this success here in the Middle East too.
