2008 Volkswagen Jetta | new car review

The Jetta sedan is basically a booted Golf and was reintroduced in the Middle East last year. Now in its fifth generation, the Jetta is offered in three different trim options in the region: Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline.

Stylistically, the Jetta’s V-formed radiator grille shows the deliberate closeness to the new Passat and the Golf GTI, the first two series models of the brand with the new ‘VW face’. The Jetta also features LED (Light Emitting Diodes) taillights that glow considerably brighter than conventional taillights.

The interior has been characterized by a clear, fresh and stylish design that any sedan would be proud of. Even the entry level Trendline version is specified to a high order which is so typical of .

The Jetta is designed to cater to a broad spectrum of UAE customers and hence Volkswagen has made it available with a choice of two petrol units – the base is the four-cylinder 1.6-litre making a modest 102bhp; offering better fuel economy. The other available unit is the five-cylinder 2.5-litre making close to 150bhp and 228Nm of torque. Both engines are available with manual and automatic transmissions.

With first class active and passive safety, the Jetta comes with airbags for driver and passenger as well as side impact protection airbags front and rear. Curtain airbags are also standard across the range. In head-on collisions, the pedals fold forward to protect the feet as well as the latest generation of the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP).

Despite reservations by critics that small sedans have no real purpose in life, the Jetta can quite endear itself to those who don’t want a hatch, but at the same time do not  want to move up a size to the Passat.
