2008 Subaru Outback | new car review

Japanese carmaker
is a niche player in the automotive realm with a knack for selling
strangely styled pieces of machinery to really specific demographics.
Available in two versions – 2.0R and 3.0R – the Outback is
essentially a Legacy, only 8.7 inches higher up. A city-slick,
country-wise combination of sports car performance and SUV
versatility, the Outback enjoys all those advantages.

Like the Legacy, the
takes on a sleeker, more angular look, but it has a
more aggressive grille and raised hood strakes. The large, drop down
fog-lamps, together with larger than Legacy headlights and a handsome
grille give a rich look to the Outback. Futuristic, tear-shaped
backlights that go all the way to the side plus linear backing lights
that are totally separated from the tail light cluster and a
seamless, frameless window setting all give this Subaru a sportier,
yet more rugged look.

Inside, the cockpit has a
cohesive look in a classy two-tone ensemble. The sporty 3-spoke
leather wheel is new and so is the newer design centre stack. Crisp
electro luminescent gauges light up the dash, well-placed cupholders,
an upper-dash console, rich leather with seat heaters, and a good mix
of leather/wood/chrome make this a very good interior.

For those on a budget,
Subaru continues to offer a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre,
four-cylinder engine. The 2.5-litre engine makes 173bhp and 227Nm of
torque. For those who prefer the smoothness of six cylinders, the
3.0-litre motor belts out 245bhp and 297Nm of torque.

Buyers looking out for a
practical yet performance machine that does everything – from
school runs to the beach with a little bit of soft-roading over the
weekends, should make a note of the Subaru Outback.
