2008 Subaru Legacy | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

The Legacy is ’s
flagship sedan and competes in the executive mid-segment sedan
category here in the Middle East. Not changed much since 2006 when it
underwent the designer’s scalpel, the Legacy carries on unabated
although the station wagon model has gone off the radar. The Subaru
brand is quite strong in some Middle Eastern countries like Oman,
Lebanon and Syria while still struggling to make its presence felt in
UAE other countries in the region.

A smart looker, the
Legacy’s lower corners of the grille has been tucked inward,
yielding an elongated, more elegant hexagonal shape. Flanking the
grille are bold, projector-type headlights, which also house the turn
indicators and running lights. Small, intense fog-lamps bracket a
wide air intake moulded into the lower fascia below the front bumper,
while rounder sides give the body a fuller-looking shape.

The interior is quieter,
less busy, with more expanse of unbroken, softly textured dash. The
centre stack, housing the stereo and climate control panels, is
finished in a matte metallic look, with the stereo controls
positioned above the climate control knobs.

The Legacy is still the
only mid-size car under AED 75,000 that comes standard with the
all-wheel drive system. The Legacy is unique in another way too: it’s
the only mid-sized car with a horizontally-opposed four cylinder
engine mounted longitudinally in the engine bay.

Power comes from three
available units – the 2.0-litre ‘R’, 2.5-litre ‘i’ and the
3.0-litre ‘R’ – with the former two employing a standard
4-speed automatic gearbox while the latter shifts using a 5-speed
automatic. The 2.0-litre unit can be had in two trim levels, while
the 2.5- and the 3.0-litre units come in ‘full option’ trims
only.

The Legacy is quite an
impressive car and it is sad that it is ignored thanks to a
combination of badge snobbery and the buying public isn’t much
aware of this competent machine.
