2008 Subaru Impreza | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

Competing in the fiercely
competitive compact car segment with the likes of Toyota Corolla,
Honda Civic, Nissan Sunny/Tiida, Mitsubishi Lancer and Mazda3,
’s Impreza scores a point or two by being the only car in
this particular class to offer All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) as standard in
certain markets.

Fully redesigned for
, the is offered as a sedan or four-door
hatchback, although when the sedan will make an appearance in the
Middle East remains a mystery. Design wise, the Impreza hatchback’s
overall styling is not so dramatic as it was in its past, which is a
shame because the older Impreza had a cult following thanks to its
rich WRC (World Rally Championship) heritage and the new model has
somewhat lost the plot.

The new Impreza is 50mm
shorter than its previous version but is wider and has a longer
wheelbase. The dashboard follows the traditional Subaru design trend
and is much more open and is easier on the eye. Also for the first
time the windows now have frames on them to improve NVH levels.

Subaru has made a virtue
of its adherence to the boxer engine and so it continues. The Impreza
is available with a choice of two powertrains – a 1.5-litre making
107bhp for customers looking for economy over performance and the
2.0-litre with 150bhp and 196Nm of torque for buyers who want a bit
of peppiness along with economy. Both engines will be mated to a
standard 4-speed automatic transmission. As mentioned earlier, Subaru
offers the AWD configuration but for those wanting to penny pinch, a
front wheel drive version is also available.

In the small car segment,
the Subaru Impreza is often overshadowed by more popular nameplates.
There are two primary reasons behind this: the Impreza’s
higher-than-average pricing and a lack of brand awareness regarding
Subaru vehicles. But for the right kind of buyer, especially one
seeking driving excitement, the Subaru Impreza can be an excellent
choice, especially the AWD version!
