2008 Skoda Superb | new car review

The is an executive car based on the platform of the Volkswagen Passat (but was elongated by 10 centimetres) and shares its mechanicals with that model. It is currently the largest and most luxurious model in ’s lineup. Neither frivolous, nor bland, the Superb looks, well… simply handsome! This is a big car, equating to huge amounts of cabin space for both – front and rear passengers – plus there’s a quality feel that endears itself to people more used to VWs and Audis.

The classy exterior is well complemented by the equally well-executed interiors, which again, are very Euro in thought. Equipment includes all that is readily found in today’s modern cars. The plastics and upholstery cloth/leather materials are all absolutely top notch. Innovations include a built-in umbrella holder in the left rear door – a good thought to keep the occupants safe from the sun when they exit the Superb.

The fuel-injected 2.8-litre V6 is mounted longitudinally, and is mated to a Tiptronic 5-speed gearbox, sending drive to the front wheels. The V6 pumps out 190bhp at 6000 revs, and 280Nm of torque at 3200.

Anti-lock disc brakes are standard as is EBD (electronic differential lock), ESP (electronic stability programme), ASR (traction control system), and MSR (engine drag moment control). The Superb scores heavily in its safety package as well. There are the front airbags for driver and passenger plus side air bags. Of course, three-point seatbelts are not only standard for those in front but also for the rear passengers. Two Isofix child seat fittings are also standard.

Spacious and well equipped, the Superb has it in it to compete in the family car market. Excellent build-quality, comfort, driving pleasure, and aesthetically pleasing – the Skoda Superb definitely gets top marks. At the end of it, if people see past the badge, they’ll be getting a ‘Superb’ car for the money.
