2008 Skoda Roomster | new car review

’s latest addition
to their passenger car line-up, the Roomster leisure activity vehicle
(as Skoda bills it!) made its debut in the Middle East last year at
the Dubai Motor Show. The Roomster is Skoda’s first car in recent
years that is not based on an existing Volkswagen platform. Instead,
it shares components with the previous Skoda Octavia and the current
Skoda Fabia.

The name is reportedly a
conscious combination of the words ‘Room’ and ‘Roadster’, and
the split personality theme is played out in the design with a
carefully honed ‘driving room’ ahead of the b-pillars and a
generous ‘living room’ the rear. The Roomster therefore competes
both in the mini MPV and leisure activity vehicle markets.

Exteriorly, the tall,
square-cut rear half suggests living space while the windscreen and
front side windows seem to be one big curve thanks to the blacked-in
screen pillars.

Inside, the three rear
seats individually slide and fold and can be taken out, and there’s
loads of legroom thanks to a wheelbase longer than an Octavia’s.
There are lots of hard plastics in the cabin, with the welcome
exception of the padded fascia top, but the quality, fit and finish
are excellent. This is a very solidly-made car, and its panel gaps
and paint finish show care and precision in its manufacture.

The only available
powerplant is the 1.6-litre 16v 4-cylinder petrol unit that also
finds its way in the Fabia range. The 1.6 four-pot-boiler makes
103bhp and 153Nm of torque with the power sent to the front wheels
via a standard manual or an available automatic transmission.

Here’s a car of the
future, very useful, highly individual-looking and great to live
with. It’s rational with a wacky twist, and sets Skoda up as its
own creative force.
