2008 Skoda Fabia | new car review

Just like Suzuki’s Swift, this is another wannabe ‘Mini’ in the affordable supermini segment. The Fabia is all new for and is currently in the second generation of its lifetime. Having grown in size from before, the new Fabia takes its styling cues from ’s new Roomster leisure activity vehicle and is available in form only, for now! The new Fabia’s design sees a new front grille, spoiler, fog lamps as well as new rear light clusters echoing that of the new Octavia’s rear lights. The interior look is modernised with new interior upholstery. Instrumentation is fairly comprehensive and includes speed and rev counter along with telltale gauges for temperature and fuel. A digital clock adds a nice touch. Though the dashboard is plastic, it has a nice feel to it and is moulded very well. The levels of equipment gradually increase as one goes through the trim levels. offers only one engine for the Middle East – the 1.6-litre engine with 103 horsepower and 153Nm of toque. offers the same powertrain in the Octavia also though the output is slightly lesser. Power is transferred to the front wheels via a standard manual or an optional automatic transmission. Safety features include ABS, driver and front passenger airbags, height-adjustable headrests and child-safety locks. Driving is made easy and pleasurable with power steering, a fully adjustable steering wheel and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. A good alternative to mainstream hatchbacks, the Fabia has good inherent qualities like superb build, hard working engine and suspension and a reasonable working environment inside. It competes with other VW Group vehicles and is a good buy at a price much lesser than its cousins.
