2008 Seat Ibiza | new car review

The Ibiza supermini is
’s take on parent company VW’s effervescent Polo model. The
Ibiza spans four generations and is available in either three- or
five-door variants. Its more aggressive styling has boosted
this model ahead of the family-friendly styling of the Polo. It is
also the largest Ibiza to date, with room for five adults, and a
spacious, if rather short, boot.

The Ibiza range has
reinforced its sporty image compared with preceding versions. This
stems from the restyling of the front bumpers which now have a more
pronounced wrap-around design, with a honeycomb bottom grille and new
front fog lights. All of the Ibiza models now come with twin
headlights. The rear light clusters sport a new dark-red background
to give them a smarter appearance. Other highlights at the rear
include new bumpers which now show the tailpipes in all their glory.

Differences can also be
spotted inside the car, most notably in the quality of the materials
used and their appearance. The transformation in quality inside the
Ibiza enhances both the look and feel of the interior. Eye-catching
shades of black, grey and silver are used to trim the dash support,
the instrument cluster, the centre console and the interior door
panels. The high-quality feel extends to the fabrics used for
upholstering the seats and for the textile trim panels adorning the
passenger compartment.

The entry-level engines
in the range now start with the humble 1.4-litre with two different
outputs: 75 and 85bhp. The next in line is the 1.6-litre engine
making 105bhp. For buyers looking for economy and performance in the
Ibiza, the best suited powertrains are the 1.6- and the 1.8-litre
4-cylinder units. All engines are available with six-speed manual or
automatic transmissions. For buyers looking for the ultimate in terms
of performance in the Ibiza, Seat offers the eye-catching Ibiza FR
hot hatch.
