2008 Saab 95 | new car review

Still very much in its
first generation, the 9-5 got distinctive and sporty styling tweaks
in 2007, so there’s not much which has changed really for . The
9-5 is available only as one of a trim/model and comes only as a
sedan although there is an estate version available in other markets.
Known as the 9-5 Aero, it comes with all the bells and whistles.

It is powered by a
2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in-line that makes 185bhp and
280Nm of torque with the power sent to the front wheels via either a
5-speed manual transmission or the silky smooth 5-speed transmission.

The 9-5 received a
thorough going-over last year, with revised styling outside and in.
applied a masked-rider makeover to the front fascia. The chrome
and dark plastic nose job makes the 9-5 look like it’s wearing too
much eye makeup, while the monochrome taillights look like someone
broke out the lenses and covered them with red cellophane.

It is on the inside that
the 9-5 shines with top notch materials and a minimalist centre
console with just a handful of buttons. Saab’s trademark ignition
key slot in the centre console reminds one of the quirkiness of this
Swedish number.

Safety and Saab go hand
in hand and it is no wonder that the 9-5 has achieved the maximum
5-star EuroNCAP rating. Build quality and the high specification is
top notch, somewhat making up for the 9-5’s relative lack of
personality. Where the 9-3 is all overflowing with verve and charm,
the 9-5 seems kind of dowdy, now that it is quite long in its years.
Nonetheless, it is still a sensible car and a viable alternative to
many executive cars.

Sadly, the competition is
just too strong for it to really compete on an equal footing.
