2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

A regal classic
throughout its lifespan, the Phantom nameplate has been brought into
the 21st century with its integrity all intact. This is a big car…
in all respects, be it size, comfort and road presence. It commands
respect… and it gets it.

The Phantom employs a
lightweight aluminium space frame body, a V12 engine that develops
tremendous power and torque and a style, inside and out, which is
every inch a incorporating cutting edge engineering
technology, unparalleled quality and the finest in hand-built
craftsmanship.

On the inside, the finest
leather, Cashmere trim and fitted cabinetry have been used to create
an atmosphere which is simple, yet of unquestionable quality. Access
is via coach doors, which open from the centre of the car are
reminiscent of the classic Rolls-Royce era and which have been chosen
to give easy access to the rear. Combined with a flat floor they
allow passengers simply to walk in to the rear, turn and sit down.

Designed for people who
sit in the back seat – who are likely to have paid for it –
rather than the driver, the Phantom redefines the term sumptuous. The
car’s largeness also proves another point – that of still being
the world’s finest motor car – and features some neat touches
such as the badges in the wheel centres remaining the right way up,
no matter how fast the wheels are spinning or for that matter at
standstill.

On the move, the
purpose-designed 6.75-litre V12 engine provides huge reserves of
power and torque. Peak torque is 719Nm at 3500 rpm, but more
importantly 75 per cent of that total is developed at just 1000 rpm.
Maximum power is 453hp.

The Phantom is
undoubtedly the most classiest and refined of all luxury cars in the
world. It has some competitors but it definitely stakes the claim of
being the most refined motor car in the world.
