2008 Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

The second-newest Rolls
Royce, the Phantom Drophead , sticks with tradition. For one, it
uses rear-hinged suicide doors, and a 6.75 litre V12 to move it’s
near 3-ton bulk around. The teak rear deck symbolizes the kind of
old-world craftsmanship that isn’t found anywhere else in today’s
automotive landscape.

Based on the Phantom,
this uses a shorter version of the same aluminium space
frame. And with only two enormous doors instead of four enormous
doors, Rolls has managed to chop a full 10 inches out of the
Phantom’s wheelbase.

The aluminium engine is
good for lots of power, and features a Bugatti Veyron-like Power
Reserve percentage dial. No all-wheel drive gadgetry here either, as
the 453hp on tap gets to the ground the old-fashioned way: through
the rear wheels, and thanks to a six-speed automatic transmission. 75
percent of its 719Nm of torque is available at 1,000 rpm – that’s
540Nm!

The interior is a modern
avant-garde reinterpretation of the traditional English Gentlemen’s
Clubroom with a wide, varied pluralistic palette of design
philosophies ranging from minimalism to ultramodern.

Another unique feature –
apart from the brushed aluminium hood – is the split trunk-lid Rolls
Royce calls a picnic boot. It allows the vertical lid to which the
license plate mounts to swing down, much like a pick-up truck’s
tailgate, while the horizontal lid is conventionally hinged.

In the Drophead,
now has a model targetting a much younger clientele, a
good move which makes perfect commercial sense while extending the
reach of the marque. This is definitely the vehicle for those wanting
class in a package which not as ostentatious as its elder brother.
