2008 Peugeot 407 | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

The 407 is ’s
weapon in the affordable market that’s teeming with
aloads of capable vehicles from the Far East. Although the 407 has
been around for quite some time now, it is testament to its classic
design that it still manages to cut it with many other new cars.

‘Purposeful’ is the
word that best describes the exterior styling of the 407. The
distinctive nose and now mandatory family grille offers an instant
recognition factor. The long bonnet and compact rear are connected by
taut, uncluttered lines.

Following the example of
the exterior lines, the interior of the 407 exudes strength and
quality. Structured around a bold central console, the cabin
appointments are extremely pleasing to see and use.

The 407, as available in
the Middle East, comes with a choice of three engines in 2.0, 2.2 and
3.0-litre V6 guises with different trim levels. An electronically
controlled 4-speed automatic ‘Tiptronic’ gearbox with sequential
control is standard, with a 6-speed auto doing duty in the V6.

Active safety features
range from large disc brakes to a new-generation electronic stability
programme (ESP), which is present on all versions. The latter
comprises an anti-skid function (ASR), ABS, emergency brake assist
(EBA), and a stability control system with particularly efficient
correction of under- and over-steering. Automatic activation of
hazard warning lights in the event of sharp deceleration informs
following vehicles of potential danger.

Most European cars suffer
from the effects of the strong Euro and the 407 is no different. A
stylish car – Peugeot has kept it updated regularly – the 407 and its
bigger 607 sibling have always had to take a back seat to the success
of their smaller hatchback brethren.
