2008 Peugeot 308 | new car review

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 by

The 308 was launched in
the region last year at the Dubai Motor Show. Based on the older 307
chassis, it displays different bodywork and is slightly larger in
size. Although only three- and five-door models are available right
now, a wagon version and a CC (coupe-cabriolet) model will join the
range later on in the year.

Continuing ’s
feline art form, the 308 sports much of its predecessor’s styling,
with similar sweeping headlights and a tall roofline allowing for
greater cabin space. The new family face as seen on the 207 is common
on the 307 with its big, shark-grille front and the 308 has grown in
all dimension from the 307.

Much like the exterior,
Peugeot has also given the car the much needed makeover in the
interior department too. The 308’s cabin looks and feels classy
setting new benchmarks in small-car interiors. It benefits from
typically elegant French styling with extensive soft-touch mouldings,
an inclined fascia and almost-retro dials and switches. Glass has
been used extensively – high-end models get a vast panoramic roof
(optional) – to offer good all-round visibility.

The 308 is available with
a choice of two engines in the Middle East. The base powerplant is
the four-cylinder 1.6-litre VTi making 120hp with power sent to the
front wheels via either a standard manual or an available automatic
transmission. The second unit is also a 1.6-litre engine unit but
makes 20 horsepower more than the base 1.6 unit.

There will be high
expectations from the 308 as it effectively replaces a successful
model which still continues to sell alongside this newcomer! It is an
appealing car for those who want to have practicality woven in a
pleasurable form.
