2008 Opel Antara | new car review

The newest member in the
mid-size SUV segment here in the Middle East, the Antara is
produced in South Korea by GM Daewoo, but sold under the brand.
The Antara is based on the GM Theta platform which shares its
underpinnings and powertrains with the Terrain – GMC’s first small
crossover. The Antara is expected to be launched in the Middle East
in the latter half of .

The Antara’s exterior
features bold lines and taut surfaces that combine to give it a
sporty muscular appearance. High ground clearance, large wheels and
robust protective elements all round are defining characteristics of
the Antara, as are its compact dimensions, taking up no more space
than a mid-size passenger car.

The interior echoes the
style of a well specified sedan, with sporty contoured seats that
highlight its active SUV character. In characteristic Opel style, all
instruments and operating controls are ergonomically placed and
arranged to project a driver-oriented layout. On board are innovative
infotainment systems familiar from other Opel models, including DVD
navigation and Bluetooth functionality.

A 3.2-litre V6 making
227hp and 297Nm of peak torque provides motivation with all that
power transferred to the wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission.
An electronically controlled, electro-hydraulic rear differential
helps distribute the power to both front and rear axles and both ABS
and stability control come as standard. Power is transmitted to all
four wheels if the electronics sense loss of traction at any corner;
the Antara otherwise plugging along in front wheel drive mode.

The Antara is yet another
attempt to push the Opel brand into some semblance of visibility in
the Middle East. So far this European make has been left to its own
devices of survival in the region. Will the Antara rescue it from
