2008 Nissan Patrol | new car review

If you’re looking for a legend, stop for the Patrol. No vehicle has a more formidable reputation for conquering the sands of the Middle East than the Patrol. It has few rivals  for both its capabilities. The Patrol is undoubtedly ’s flagship SUV acknowledged in the region as the ‘King of All Terrain’. It is known much for its   capabilities then its on-road handling and manoeuvrability. Available in no less than six trims, three engine options and two transmissions, this iconic 4×4 is a force to reckon with. In 2007, freshened up the exterior with new  bumpers and taillights and brought in an all-new interior, and the Patrol carries over this into the model-year with minor additions. Powerplants on offer include two petrol and one diesel unit – all six-cylinder and inline in configuration. The most powerful of the lot is the 4.8-litre DOHC petrol unit with  280hp on offer. The second in line is the 230hp 4.5-litre OHV while the third unit is solely dedicated to those looking for enormous torque – a diesel powered 4.2-litre V6 with 135hp and 280Nm from a lowly 2000rpm. All units are mated to either a 5-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. Despite its functionality and durability, the Patrol is a comfortable machine, with subdued yet pleasing trim levels inside, bags of space and a better ride than is expected.  While its off-road prowess is without doubt, the Patrol instils a lot of confidence on black tops, with ride and handling having improved by leaps and bounds. It may not be a sports SUV but it can surprise quite a few faster and more expensive machines with its enthusiasm and guts.
