2008 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The B Class is yet
another take by Mercedes-Benz who rather than call it a hatchback,
prefer to address it as a Compact Sports Tourer! Whatever you call
it, it actually has the vagaries of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in
a compact form.

The B-Class is a front
wheel drive vehicle and employs engines ranging in capacity from
1.5-litres to 2.0-litres with a 1.7-litre sandwiched between them. It
maintains the sandwich floor concept first seen in the A-Class which
actually forms the inspiration for this car. The powertrain (engine
and transmission) moves beneath the passenger cell (located at high
seating position) in the event of a big frontal impact.

Its inside is
surprisingly roomy, basically due to the sandwich floor. Also,
Mercedes Benz developed the concept of TAF (Touch And Feel), which
applies to all the devices of the automobile, tactile and ergonomic
improvements. Like all good Mercs, the B-Class has interior
appointments to match all the high tech chassis and drivetrain
features.

The quickest B-Class
model in the petrol range is the B200 Turbo, which is powered by a
193hp, 2.0-litre turbo/intercooled 4-cylinder engine generating 280Nm
of torque. Transmissions available throughout the range are 5- and
6-speed manual or automatic units.

The B-Class sees
Mercedes-Benz’s second attempt to crack open the small luxury
hatchback segment. This is basically VW territory but BMW and Audi
have also made their presence felt here. The B-Class brings a high
degree of versatility to the table and it is this idea of flexibility
the German automaker is keen to exploit. Though paying a whole lot of
money for a hatch, never mind the badge, is something that will be on
most buyers’ minds.
