The Beetle is unquestionably ’s most iconic product, with a history spanning more than half a century. The latest incarnation might have been around for a couple of years now but it remains as popular as ever even though it is due for a midlife revision shortly.

The latest update, launched in 2005, was the , which added open top motoring to the already popular runabout. It is evidence of changing motoring tastes and values that, during the mid 20th century the Beetle was considered very much a small family car, while it is now regarded as a , with all of the sporty and youthful connotations that the tag brings with it. The fact remains, however, that it is one of the most distinctive motor cars on the roads today – instantly recognisable and now so much better finished and equipped than its forefathers.

The Beetle’s cabin, for instance, is dramatically modern, giving an impression of space that is unusual in a car of this size. The windscreen is positioned well forward, thus creating good headroom for the driver and front passenger, at the point where the cabin reaches its maximum height. The latest range of colours and interior trim are very much worthy of this 21st century reincarnation of the world’s most popular car.

There is a choice of two engines in the Middle East, 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre Turbo units, that are both well developed and, as you would expect from VW, reliable. Married to a five speed manual gearbox or optional four speed automatic the Beetle remains a distinctive fun car for those who want to make a statement!
