2008 Kia Sportage | new car review

This five-door SUV model is thoroughly modern in every aspect of its design which has more than a passing resemblance to a Scandinavian model. Kia has done quite a bit of work on the Sportage, especially on the design aspect. It gets a sculptured front end and a long sporty roofline. There is a separate D-pillar window, while the broad tailgate gives a hint at the cavernous interior. Sporty twin exhausts feature on the V6 petrol model. That it continues to sell very well is proof of its well thought out design and engineering attributes.

For the segment represents, it is longer, wider and higher. The five-seater Sportage offers customers much of the technical sophistication and stylish looks of the popular Sorento and for the current year, the Sportage gets a cosmetic mid-cycle facelift that includes a smarter grille and revised headlamps. Interior details enhance comfort and form with function. The well-proportioned greenhouse allows good visibility in all directions. Controls are well placed and easy to operate, and instruments are easy to read. The rear seat cushion and backrest has a unique ‘Fold & Dive’ system to create a spacious, square-sided, completely flat cargo area. Only one engine is offered – a four-cylinder 2.0-litre making 142bhp and 185Nm. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic  transmissions with full auto or manual selection are offered as a choice along with two-wheel or four-wheel drive options.

Kia’s 4×4 system uses Active Torque Transfer which progressively transfers drive from front-only to all four wheels if slippage is detected. Standard equipment includes traction control, while ESP (Electronic Stability Program) will be available and every model comes with front, side and curtain airbags. The Sportage has benefited from Kia’s newfound ability to move with the times, with good design and sound engineering providing a sophisticated and utilitarian package for an excellent price.
