2008 Kia Sorento | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

The Sorento marked Kia’s move into a decidedly up-market SUV turf, thanks to its high level of trim, outstanding reliability and all-round capabilities. The styling, done in-house by Kia, projects a beefy look that is well proportioned throughout the vehicle. The design is very global in nature and does not seem to offend with any quirks. Surely, the styling definitely conveys a strong message that the Sorento is not a third-world interpretation of the SUV theme.

The cabin features well thought out ergonomics, including soft-touch plastics, giving it a polished and able look. The Sorento at times feels a bit over the top with its wood grain trim but to be fair, Kia has managed to rein in its exuberance and kept the interior within sensible limits. The dashboard is classy yet functional with all instruments within easy sight, with the centre console housing the audio system and automatic climate control. The interior is roomy with good headroom and more than enough legroom all around. The Sorento is available in different trim levels with impressive equipment options including a premium sound system, keyless entry, front and side airbags, cruise control and two power points.

The Sorento’s aging 3.5-litre V6 has been replaced by an efficient 3.3-litre V6 that now produces 197bhp and 295Nm of torque, which does a commendable job – on black tops or in the rough. The Sorento uses a four-speed auto.

The part-time AWD chips in whenever needed with primary drive going to the front wheels. A switch on the dash engages 4WD high range on the fly, while engaging low range needs the car has to be stationary.
The smaller 2.4-litre engine version earlier offered has been discontinued.

It is part of the long-standing Kia tradition of offering a lot for not very much money, and it has to be considered as such.
